First, you should keep building cardiorespiratory fitness but stop treating it as the whole program. Second, use muscular fitness as a highly specific tool for performance and physical durability. A balanced program considers maximal force, the ability to sustain repeated contractions, and the ability to produce force quickly.

You can carefully shift this muscular emphasis based on your current sport and specific training block. Third, you must treat balance and gait-related qualities as relevant long before they become performance limitations. For older athletes, this makes movement control a reasonable component of long-term athletic preparation rather than an afterthought. Fourth, think in terms of overlapping adaptations during your weekly workouts.

A consistent strength routine is incredibly valuable even when your primary goal is strictly aerobic endurance performance. The framework identifies five core components, but the roundup does not establish that each component should receive equal training time. ACSM instead emphasizes individualized programming that addresses the components according to the person and specific context. A long endurance session may strongly target cardiorespiratory fitness, for example, while producing a different stimulus than a dedicated balance session.
